If you’re considering assisted living for yourself or a loved one, you may have questions about the associated costs and what they include. Typically, assisted living communities charge a base monthly rent and, based on each resident’s unique needs, additional services on top of that.
Be sure to discuss cost specifics with the specific community you’re interested in. Better yet, schedule a tour to see everything the community has to offer.
What Is Assisted Living?
Before diving into the details, let’s go over what assisted living entails. Assisted living is a long-term care option for older adults who need help with some daily activities, but don’t require intensive medical support. Assisted living staff can help with tasks like:
- Housekeeping, laundry, and dining
- Personal care, bathing, dressing, and using the toilet
- Moving around
Assisted living is a suitable option for older adults who desire independence but need a little extra support with certain tasks.
Finances & Assisted Living
Assisted living doesn’t come without costs. In most cases, residents or their families will pay for the majority of fees.
Cost of Assisted Living
According to seniorliving.org, the estimated median cost of assisted living in the United States is $5,511 per month or $66,126 per year as of 2024. Fees can vary widely from state to state, from $4,997 in Missouri to $7,250 in the District of Columbia and Massachusetts.
Does Insurance Cover Assisted Living?
Most health insurance plans don’t include long-term care as part of their coverage.
According to the National Institute on Aging, most people pay for assisted living themselves, because Medicare doesn’t cover this type of long-term care. Medicaid, however, may offer coverage for some elements of assisted living. But this depends on a range of eligibility factors.
As you can see, then, assisted living can be a substantial investment. That’s why it’s important to understand exactly what you’re paying for. Make sure to ask for a detailed price breakdown from the communities you’re interested in.
What’s Included in Assisted Living
