What Is Memory Care?
Memory care is a lifestyle for seniors living with cognitive conditions like Alzheimer’s, dementia, and Parkinson’s disease. Our memory care residents are cared for in a structured environment designed to help enhance their well-being, with stimulating activities that can help support their cognitive abilities. We customize our residents’ care plans with Teepa Snow’s GEMS memory care model to provide a personalized level of care and support.
Teepa Snow’s GEMS® Model
We use proven memory care techniques to support our residents and work with families to help them use effective communication techniques while engaging with their loved ones.
The foundation of our approach is built on Teepa Snow’s Positive Approach to Care and the GEMS® model.
We train our staff to provide compassionate care while acknowledging each person’s unique abilities and needs. Our care levels fall into 6 distinct categories, also known as “gems.”
Sapphire
A sapphire brain ages normally, is relatively flexible and organized, and works well with other GEMS. Those in a sapphire state can be good care partners for individuals with dementia due to their adaptability.
Emerald
Individuals in the emerald state may find it difficult to maintain clarity in thought and communication. They may be unaware of the changes they’re experiencing or attribute challenges to others.
Family members and caregivers may find it easier to adapt to the situation rather than focusing on flaws when providing support.
Diamond
In the diamond state, people stay clear and sharp but tend to become more rigid, with some resistance to change. They can still thrive despite the challenges they face.
Because they often experience a blend of past and present behaviors, it can be harder for their families to identify the signs of dementia.
Pearl
In the pearl state, an individual’s reflexes are constantly active, body systems can start to fail, and gross motor skills can decline. Despite these challenges, the individual can still thrive. The right care and support systems can reveal the remarkable pearl that lies within.
Ruby
In the ruby state, people may experience a decline in fine motor skills, which could affect vision, speech, and the ability to chew and swallow. However, they often retain larger movements and their strength.
Caregivers and loved ones are advised to manage stress by being understanding and flexible while maintaining a calm and supportive state, akin to being a sapphire.
Amber
Those in the amber state are known to live in the present, driven by sensations and their curiosity, with a reduced awareness of safety.
They often look for enjoyable experiences but tend to react strongly to dislikes, which can provide a challenge for caregivers who must learn to adjust to their fluctuating behaviors.
